2006 NFL Preview
By: Jason Cunningham (8/17/2006)
Generally, my NFL Preview is
written before training camp begins. However, I did not want to pick another
Superbowl flop. Last year, I picked the Atlanta Falcons to defeat the Pittsburgh
Steelers in the Superbowl. Oh well, this year is going to be different.
In the AFC, I had a difficult
time picking a team to reach this year's Superbowl. Honestly, I was leaning
towards the Pittsburgh Steelers, but then came quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's
motorcycle accident. I'm not sure if Big Ben can lead the Steelers back
to the promised land, so soon. Also, there is no receiver Antwaan Randle El to
throw to; he is now a member of the Washington Redskins. If I must pick a team,
it is the Denver Broncos. This is a veteran team with an awesome defense, and
can plug anyone in the backfield to run behind that offensive line. Jake
Plummer, the quarterback of the Broncos will be super this fall; otherwise, the
rookie Jay Cutler may be stepping in.
I already know many people are stuck on the Indianapolis
Colts. Without running back Edgerrin James, the Colts offense will not be as
prolific. Do not be surprised if Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning is constantly
running for his life. Remember, football is a total team sport unlike baseball.
I thought about the Cincinnati Bengals. Unfortunately, come the start of the
regular NFL season, who knows what the injury status of quarterback Carson
Palmer will be.
I am almost 100% what team will represent the NFC in
Superbowl XLI. The Carolina Panthers are a team of destiny. They went out and
signed another wide receiver named Keyshawn Johnson. It is a defensive
coordinator's nightmare to face All-Pro Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson at wide
receiver, on the same night.
2006 Predictions: NFL MVP: Kansas
City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson - He is now NFL royalty. There is no Priest to
stand in his way. Larry Johnson is the complete running back.
NFL Offensive Player of the Year:
Indianapolis Colts' QB Peyton Manning - He will have great statistics.
There is going to slight fall off in the running game without Edgerrin James.
NFL Coach of the Year - Carolina Panthers Coach John Fox - His
team is going to win the Superbowl.
NFL Rookies of the Year: Offensive New Orleans Saints Reggie
Bush - Who is Deuce? Reggie should have run for mayor of New Orleans. He will
gain over a 1000 yards this season. Defensive: Oakland Raiders CB Michael
Huff - He can flat out play. As bad as the Oakland Raiders will be this season,
Huff should put up tremendous numbers.
NFL Superbowl: Carolina Panthers 23 - Denver Broncos 17.
