Is the American Cultural War
Taking Away from the War on Terrorism?
By: Jason Cunningham (7/25/2005)
Are Americans becoming mavericks, in
regards to the culture war that has erupted since the 2000 Presidential
election? Since 9-11, Americans now understand that the threat of terrorism does
not escape our native land.
With the uniting of the Bush
Administration with conservative think tanks and religious Churches and
organizations, a cultural war emerged that has not brought such heated debate,
since the time of the Civil Rights Movement. From attempts to condemn and even
ban gay marriage, fighting for faith based initiatives, protecting religious
symbols in public places, the Janet Jackson Superbowl surprise, the Terri
Schiavo case, and so on; over the four years, the American people have been
through a lot of cultural ideology. This is a divided nation based on cultural
ideology.
Terrorism is now something in the back
of our minds. Since 9-11 the American people have been on high alert. Yet, the
cultural wars that have occurred over the last four years, and have led many to
raise money for their prospective positions. Now, should the American people
focus their energy on making their streets safer, instead of challenging
personal decisions that have no bearing on their economic wallets? We truly have
not shown a true commitment to our own homeland security. There should not be a
single street in American where you would feel unsafe after dark. Ask yourself,
what would stop a person engaging in heinous acts from setting up shop there!
