Freeze! Normally, in our society we associate the word “freeze” with a police officer that is about to make an arrest of a criminal. However, we should stop ourselves before venturing to the malls and other retail stores to spend more than our monthly budgets allow.

Keep in mind, there is such thing as spending too much money. Otherwise, people would not bother creating a budget for themselves, or as part of their job function. We should not desire to have our bank accounts in the negative nor not possess enough money to pay for an unforeseen car repair. Therefore, following a budget should keep you from overspending and show where you have more money to devote to savings.

It can be difficult to stick to a budget. The kids might need an extra $100 for a school activity, or you will be taking the entire family on the next business trip. However, when you use the money that has been designated towards savings, you incur what is called an opportunity cost. Depending on how often and the amount that you dip into your potential savings, you could be setting yourself up for a financial disaster. Can you imagine having bad credit and paying an interest rate of 14% on a car loan? It can happen to you.

You might want to hire a financial professional, such as a financial planner or CPA, if you have problems sticking to your budget. Remember that none of us benefit when someone cannot afford to pay his or her bills because of a lack of financial planning or failure to follow a budget.
