Is it Necessary to Give a Two Week Notice?

It is proper to give your employer a two week notice if you have decided to resign. While this does not guarantee that your current employer will allow you to work for the next two weeks, many potential employers will ask in the interview process if you have ever failed to give a current or past employer a two weeks notice.

Because not every company will want you to stay around, be ready to leave the building upon providing your employer with a two weeks notice.  As a result, your employee ID may be deactivated by lunch time. Your personal belonging could also be packed by company security while you are having your exit interview with HR.

On the other hand, some employers will allow you to stay the full two weeks.   This will give you the opportunity to finish up any unfinished projects and to say goodbye to co-workers.  Additionally, make sure your current employer understands that you are grateful for all the experience that you have gained as a loyal employee.

Regardless of some pundits’ opinions, you must give a two weeks notice.  If your employer immediately decides to terminate your employment, you still followed proper protocol.  In many cases, your employer will allow you to work for the next two weeks.  If so, please finish any unfinished business, which may include training your replacement or documenting an important project.
