In this economy, none of us can afford to become complacent in the workplace. With an unstable economy, many employers are examining their workers’ productivity with great scrutiny. As a result, this is the perfect time to improve our computer, math, spreadsheet, and writing skills.
What Skills are in Demand?
In business, the spreadsheet is king. Most executives use an Excel spreadsheet to track their companies’ performance. If you want to become a corporate executive in the near future then invest 30 minutes per day learning Microsoft’s Excel. Not only will you learn to better organize your work and impress your bosses with your Excel knowledge, but also you will improve your ability to analyze various forms of data. Trust me; I have no reason to lie to you.
If you learn certain computer languages, such as Java, Pearl, or C++, you can improve your marketability in business. Even if you do not work in your company’s IT department, it always helps to have someone that can explain a problem to the IT department with confidence and knowledge. Strive to become your department’s computer expert; it may provide you with some job security.
Are you a great writer? I hope so. I am still working hard to become a decent writer. I guess that is my problem. In any case, some companies have paid million dollar fines because of poor writing. Unfortunately, those companies lost in court or settled out of court with customers, states, or other regulators. If you want your company to recognize your talent, you must learn to become an effective writer.
Also, you must work to improve your math skills. Find an algebra and geometry book to improve your problem solving abilities. You might discover that you are unable to solve simple math equations. If so, take your time to relearn these vital math skills. You never know when you will be called upon to solve a complex company issue that involves problem solving. Right now, I am trying to teach myself Trigonometry and Calculus. There is no pressure on me!
