QB Philip Rivers of the San Diego Charges was unable to lead his team to victory in yesterday’s AFC Divisional Playoffs matchup versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won 35-24. Regardless, the AFC Playoff loss should have not been River’s last game of this NFL season, but an injustice occurred in this season’s AFC Pro Bowl voting. How do you leave Philip Rivers, the NFL’s highest rated QB, this season, with a passer rating of 105.5, off the AFC Pro Bowl roster?
Rivers threw more TDs (34) and passing yards (4,009) and fewer interceptions (11) than this season’s NFL MVP, Peyton Manning (27 TDs, 12 Ints and 4,002 yards) of the Indianapolis Colts. Now, Manning is deserving of his Pro Bowl nod and his third NFL MVP award, but Rivers also deserves to be on the AFC Pro Bowl roster, especially when you consider that N.Y. Jets QB Brett Farve will be the starting at QB for the AFC Pro Bowl roster. Farve ended the 2008 NFL season with 22 TDs, 22 Ints, 81.0 passer rating and 3,472 passing yards. How did Brett Farve even make the Pro Bowl team? The fans voted for Farve out of loyalty because his on the field statistics had nothing to do with their selection. Clearly, Brett Farve will be a first ballot NFL Hall of Famer, but he does not deserve to be playing in this year’s Pro Bowl.
Even if you argue that QB Chad Pennington (19 TDs, 7 Ints, 97.4 passer rating and 3,653 passing yards) of the Miami Dolphins, the other reserve QB for the AFC Pro Bowl roster or Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts had a better season than Philip Rivers, then at worse, Rivers should have been the third QB named to the AFC Pro Bowl team.
In the interim, Philip Rivers needs to hire a PR firm, so that he never experiences another Pro Bowl snub in his NFL career. Furthermore, Rivers needs to be in more commercials. As a suggestion, Rivers should appear in a funny ESPN commercial with his teammates Antonio Gates and LaDainianTomlinson. Rivers’ agent must find endorsements that allow Philip “to pump his fists,” which Rivers does quite often after TDs or long plays from scrimmage.
Rivers has a great personality, but everyone around the country needs to be know this. Otherwise, Rivers may be sitting at home for next year’s Pro Bowl, even if he has the statistics to prove he belongs in the game.
