Reflections on semester one of an MBA program!

I still remember arriving on campus for MBA orientations. Although orientations seems like it occurred many days ago, this is really not the case. Ironically, I must admit that I have changed for the better since the third week of August, the beginning of orientations. In the meanwhile my mind has expanded and my confidence has been enhanced by the many opportunities to prove myself, in and out of the classroom.
Overcoming the Unknown
Learning to be flexible was necessary to thrive during my first semester. There were a lot of group projects, so compromise and commitment to scheduled meeting times were important. All of us had other homework assignments and personal life agendas that required our attention.
I must admit; sleep was important. I required some of it to do my best work at 3 am. I hope that statement did not frighten you. When we enter a store most of us wish to buy bread, but we are shocked if we go to the store and there is no bread on the shelves. To be honest, I do not always consider the work tasks and schedules of the employees that make it possible so that bread is on the store’s shelves. Yet I suppose I should be cognizant of this information since I am in graduate business school. My point, I sometimes did homework and readings, especially case studies, at times most of you were sleeping because of my obligations to group projects, study groups, school functions, etc. I approach graduate business school like my business depends on it. Sometimes I might not have enough turkey in the deli, so I need to read twenty more pages before going to bed. It was a strange analogy, but I hope you get my point.
Finals
I had a final in each of my classes. Some finals lasted two hours while others lasted three hours. It was a grueling experience. Regardless of my preparation for finals, each professor made the prospects of achieving perfection challenging, yet each exam was fair. On my part, it took both endurance and desire to keep working hard until the end of each exam. However, I was excited when the semester ended, for I had completed the assignments, read those chapters and case studies, and made new friends. After my last final, I spent the rest of the day reflecting on the great blessing that has been given to me, the opportunity to be an MBA student. Due to my MBA experience, I expect better things to come from myself in the second semester and beyond. I see the light and it shines bright.
