A few years ago, many internet marketers were still exchanging links with other websites at alarming rates. However, times have changed and the importance of link exchanges appears to be on the decline. As a result, internet marketers need to find new ways to gain importance in the search engines and credibility amongst the general public, namely through marketing.
At one time, any website could achieve a high PR ranking in Google. An internet marketer just needed to exchange links with a few highly ranked websites (Google PR 6 to 8) and follow the SEO rules provided by the search engine. But since then, Google and other search engines have cracked down on websites that are known for selling links for PR and those making a living from link farms (sites that have no content, just links). It is no longer easy to make a few bucks on a monthly basis!
There is some good news. Marketing is now more important than ever. Therefore, the dependence on link exchanges is pretty much gone. You can write good articles and spread the news about your website through word of mouth and other media outlets. Otherwise, you will likely be mad at your monthly sales total. Those days of the non-marketing internet marketer/webmaster are gone.
