Things that may surprise you about graduate business school!

First, I am writing this article from the perspective of full-time graduate business school student. Therefore, I do not know what it is like to be a part-time MBA student. Now here is my disclaimer: while my MBA experience may not be the same as your MBA experience at another graduate business school, I will reveal both my thoughts as well as the thoughts of others who have attended other MBA programs.
Graduate business schools focus on leadership, not future earnings!
Throughout my brief journey in graduate business school, there has been a common theme: “What type of leadership will you bring to an organization?” Some of my other friends and acquaintances at other graduate business schools have pretty much echoed the same theme. Unfortunately, in the real world outside of these MBA programs, some people think graduate business school students are being turned into greedy, future corporate leaders by MBA programs. Trust me; this is not the truth. Almost on a daily basis, one of my professors, if not more, is speaking about the values of corporate responsibility, which may include the well-being of company’s employees as well as environmental issues. We talk about the economy, but none of my professors are teaching me to treat people like raw materials on an assembly line.
Too often, we focus on negative events happening in our society. There is a lot of good being done in Corporate America and graduate business school. My graduate business school is always finding volunteer opportunities for its students. Soon, I will be back in the corporate world, but you should not worry that graduate business has or will corrupt me. From my perspective, graduate business school is making me more ethical each day because it has improved my business vision through case studies, class discussions, guest speakers, and textbooks to see additional business dilemmas that I had not thought of prior to entering graduate business school.
Be prepared to network in graduate business school!
I remember the majority of my MBA interviews. In each one, we talked about the importance of teamwork; teamwork is very important in an MBA program. But, I only talked about networking in two interviews. Looking back, I am surprised that networking was not a focal point of each interview. Ironically, a great MBA program will have plenty of opportunities for you to network with other students, alums, faculty, guest speakers, and corporate recruiters. Yes, I attend a great MBA program! I have no clue why most graduate business schools did not mention networking in my interviews!
If you do not like to network, it will change within the first month of graduate business school. Between applying for internships and attending corporate luncheons, listening to and communicating with alums, corporate recruiters, guest speakers, and other students, I would guess most MBA students will have more conversations in graduate business school than they have had in their entire lifetimes. This is just reality. If you are thinking about applying to graduate business school and are not comfortable with networking, you probably now should do some volunteer work that you truly believe in to build those vital social skills that are necessary for success in graduate business school and beyond.
