What is graduate business school really like?

On several occasions, I have been asked to describe what graduate business school is really like.  First, it has been challenging, but this has been the most rewarding experience of my life.  Honestly, I am constantly reading textbooks and analyzing case studies and data.  In addition, I find time to read the Wall Street Journal and watch CNBC and Bloomberg.

Start your graduate business school day early

To begin, I attend a Midwest graduate business school program, but I will not reveal the MBA program’s name unless I receive permission from the business school’s Dean.

Because of habit, I generally wake up no later than 5 AM, even on the weekends.  Why do I get up so early?  I read for my business school classes or work on my homework assignments.  I do spend about fifteen to thirty minutes each morning watching both CNBC and Bloomberg.  I want to know what has been going on in the U.S. and other global markets while I was sleeping.  Believe me; some of our class discussions are ripped directly from the morning headline news.

I try to get to school no later than 7:35 AM, even if I do not have class until 9:30 A.M.  I head to my locker before finding a study room, depending on when my first class begins.  I have five different classes, Monday through Thursday, and my concentration is Finance.  I hope I am not boring you.  I promise you this article will get better.

Graduate business school is a team environment

To be honest, I attend a graduate business school that places a great emphasis on teamwork.  During our MBA orientations, I witnessed fellow students helping one another with Statistics and Accounting concepts.  It is now week seven of my MBA journey, and my fellow classmates are just as helpful now as they were on day one of orientations.

Each week my Financial Accounting homework is completed with the help of my accounting teammate.  We schedule some time each week to come together and complete the assignment. It is a great learning experience because I learn much more than accounting.  Time is a very precious commodity in graduate business school.  Therefore, if we schedule to meet for an hour; then, the accounting assignment must be done in an hour.  In the business world, if your boss wants an answer in an hour, then your professional e-mail response must be received by your boss within the hour.  I like to think of my homework assignments as projects from my bosses, my professors.

There is more to come about graduate business school

I could go on about my love of graduate business school.  I could provide you with insight into the MBA classroom.  I will do so within the near future; however, I cannot speak directly about specific lecture material without express permission from my professors.  Well, I have to get back to my MBA books.  Please send me an e-mail at sjbc4119@yahoo.com and put MBA questions in the subject line.  I would love to hear from you.
