Why you need to study for the GMAT?

Do not be overconfident about taking the GMAT.  It is a tough test; I can attest to this fact from personal experience.  For one, you must answer these questions under tough time limits.  Furthermore, these questions can be confusing, especially if you lose your focus for a brief moment.

You need to be alert when you walk into your GMAT testing center.  On test day, you will also need to be confident that you have a good understanding of the test structure.  Otherwise, you might not finish each section of the test within the time limits.  You have 30 minutes to complete each of the two analytical writing essays.  In addition, you must complete thirty-seven quantitative questions within 75 minutes and complete forty-one verbal questions within 75 minutes.  Because the GMAT adjusts to your skill level, you will probably have to work hard to finish the each test section on time.  For example, if you are scoring at the 700 GMAT level, then you can expect the majority of your questions to be at or above the 700 test level.  On the other hand, if you are scoring at the 600 GMAT level, you should expect to get a lot of questions at or above the 600 test level. As a result, no test takers will walk out of the testing center without a GMAT challenge.

Additionally, you must become familiar with the type of questions that you might see on test day.  I can tell you that I had never heard of a data sufficiency question prior to studying for the GMAT.  Additionally, many people have not studied idioms in years.  Trust me; you will see idioms on the sentence correction problems.  Learn those idioms. On previous standardized tests, you probably had the opportunity to change your answers after reading several reading comprehension questions.  Unfortunately, when you complete a GMAT question, you cannot change your answer after you finish that question.

Studying for the GMAT is important.  First, you must understand the time constraints of the test.  Second, you must be aware of the many GMAT type questions.  While preparation for the GMAT can vary from person to person, you need to study wisely, so you can do your very best on test day. Good luck!
