Can You Survive Selling One Insurance Product?

Most insurance agents of today sell more than one type of insurance product. In fact, many agents sell not just life, accident and health insurance products but also property and casualty insurance products. But, can you survive in the insurance business if you decide to sell only one type of insurance product, such as life insurance?
In insurance sales, the products do not sell themselves. It takes a qualified insurance agent to help the client understand the need and the features of an insurance product that can help fulfill this need. In addition, an insurance agent must advertise via word of mouth or through a strategic ad campaign (i.e. radio ad). Therefore, strong marketing is very important for longevity in the insurance industry.
Some will argue that it is better to sell an array of insurance products. However, it depends on your ability to market your services and whether you specialize in a specific area of insurance. If everyone in town knows you are good at explaining and selling disability insurance, do you really need to sell life insurance or auto insurance? It will depend on how much income you earn from your disability insurance sales. For some insurance agents, $60K to $100K is enough money to earn in one year. These individuals may not bother selling any other insurance products.
While most insurance agents prefer to sell more than one insurance product, it is possible for you to sell one type of insurance product and survive in the business. But, you will need to see a lot of clients that solely want that insurance product!
