The toughest part of being an insurance agent is not selling an actual insurance policy. But, gaining the recognition of being a top rated insurance agent in your community is quite a challenge. You want people to trust you enough that they are calling you to set an appointment, instead of vice versa.

There is no time to waste as an insurance agent. As you sit idle, those considered to be your competitors may be thinking of ways to market their insurance products to your insurance clients and other would be insurance prospects. If this is not a concern for you, it might be time that you start worrying!

As an insurance agent, your job is centered around marketing. Most insurance companies expect you to do the majority of your own marketing. Therefore, you should not wait for your insurance company to pay for a full ad in the business section of your local newspaper, on your behalf. Pinch yourself if you have such a dream!

You must maintain a goal of marketing to your target markets, twenty-four hours a day, even when you are sleep or on vacation in the Bahamas. Unfortunately, this is where many insurance agents fail to succeed. When I worked as an office insurance agent, I never thought about marketing twenty-four hours per day. I will admit it; my efforts were limited to passing out business cards, hanging up a few fliers and calling insurance prospects on the phone.

So, what can you do to market around the clock? First, think outside the box. Where can you get the most exposure for your marketing dollars? You should try several different ads, including billboards, television, radio spots, the local newspaper and on city buses or train rails. People need to see your face and hear the passion in your voice. Additionally, a lot of restaurants allow businesses to market on their place mats, and you also might consider advertising in the program or arena of a local professional sports team.

Regardless of your insurance specialty, you constantly need to market yourself and products. If you are good at writing about insurance or financial issues, then you should submit articles to local newspapers, financial magazines and websites. Before you submit an article, check with your compliance officer to get his or her approval, if need be. Remember that a thousand or more people reading your name and article in a recognized new source cannot be bad for your insurance business. Besides, it can help turn you into a local celebrity!
