The Death of an Insurance Agent: No Good Marketing Plan

Being an insurance agent or financial representative can be an exciting career choice. If you are good at the job, you can afford to go to expensive dinners hosted by the mayor of your city or even members of Congress, or just drive a fancy car and live in a big house. However, if you do not excel in the financial service industry, as an insurance agent or financial representative, you probably did not create an effective marketing plan.

In life, most of us do not plan to fail. No one plans to flunk out of college, whether it be undergraduate or graduate school. In my defense, I had no intentions of failing out of law school, but it happened. Yes, it is unfortunate that life has it disappointments; yet, some of them can be avoided.

As an insurance agent or financial representative, you have the responsibility of finding and recommending the best products for your clients. Your service can be the difference in a family having income after the breadwinner’s death or disability, or finding a saving plan that works for a married couple that hopes to spend their retirement years in financial comfort.

In order for you to service clients, you must set appointments with them, and then close some business. Throughout my short stint as a financial representative, the hardest task of the day was setting 3 to 4 appointments with qualified individuals or families. To be honest, it was hard to set good appointments daily because I had no marketing plan. Instead of building on yesterday’s work, I started each day from scratch. It was a foolish practice for any job career, but especially for someone pursing a career in sales.

A marketing plan should be a roadmap for what you plan to accomplish. It should include your target markets and how you plan to penetrate those particular markets. If you do not know what a marketing plan is or how to create one, seek professional help. It is better to pay someone to help you formulate your marketing objectives than to go broke from being an unsuccessful sales representative. Believe me, I was once that broke financial representative!
