As an insurance agent, it is important to serve your clients in a competent manner. As a result, the states in which you are licensed to sell insurance and other variable products, if you possess a securities license, will require you to complete so many hours of continuing education over a set period of time (e.g. one year to four years).

In the field of insurance, there is constant change involving new products coming to the market, new tax laws that affect insurance products and retirement plans, and rules and regulations that center around the marketing of these products. Therefore, as an insurance agent, you must always be in a learning mode. Otherwise, you could be doing your clients a disservice because of not understanding how an insurance product works or the new contribution rules for an IRA annuity, if the individual is age 50 and older.

There are courses that insurance agents can take to earn their continuing education hours, in order to renew their licenses. These courses can be done in a classroom setting (i.e. seminar at an office certified in insurance education) or involve reading a book, usually as a self study course, in which you might need to take a test concerning the material, in order to receive credit. Some courses in insurance and other financial related products will earn more credit hours than others. Please check with your state insurance department for a current list of course credits and their approved providers.

The purpose of continuing education is not to discourage or burden insurance agents. It is an opportunity to explore a topic in insurance or a related product that you may offer to your current clientele. As you gain more knowledge, you become more competent as an insurance agent. And remember, the learning material in a continuing education class is provided by an expert in the field or certified instructor.
