Why Your Office Insurance Agents Matter?

Many insurance agents do not worry about their office mates. However, the reputation of your company and office can be at stake because a few agents may not be competent. On the other hand, there may be insurance agents in your office that specialize in areas where you need help to close an insurance deal (i.e. group health insurance or split dollar life insurance).

Ultimately, an insurance agent has no one to blame if he or she does not write any insurance business in a given week. There is no where to hide. But, your job is to set appointments, make great recommendations for your potential and existing clients and close plenty of insurance business.

Since your job is to write insurance business, as an insurance agent, you must sometimes defer to an expert in an area of insurance that you might not be as strong. Next week, you might have an appointment with the CEO of a company with 100 employees to discuss group health insurance. If talking about group health insurance is a foreign subject to you, do not panic. Find someone at your insurance office that is considered to more experienced in the group health insurance arena and take them on that appointment. It is better to split business than to get nothing at all.

At some point in time, during your insurance career, your company might hire an incompetent insurance agent. While management is ultimately responsible for the activities of an insurance agent in your office, you have a duty to your company and to the current and potential clients to help educate this insurance agent. Pull the agent to the side and explain the importance of full disclosure and not “talking off the cuff.” Besides, no one wants to see anybody buy insurance that is not inappropriate for their individual or family needs. Additionally, an incompetent insurance agent can affect your insurance business. If the general public hears about the agent’s incompetency via word of mouth or through the media, the reputation of your company and office could be damaged within your community. Therefore, you might lose some sales.

Your fellow insurance agents in the office do matter. They can help or hinder your sales efforts. In cases where you are not familiar with an insurance area, it is necessary to use an office mate that can help you close the insurance business. Conversely, some insurance agents are not capable of making good insurance recommendations. These individuals require extra training because they could harm policyholders, as well as the reputation of your office and company.
