As a webmaster, you must find opportunities to make money from your web content. Otherwise, you will not be compensated for your out of pocket expenses (the cost of the domain and web hosting), as a result of running a website. Some webmasters rely solely on search engine ad programs like Google Adsense or MSN adCenter, in order to earn a living, while the rest of us either belong to affiliate programs only or incorporate the use of both affiliate and search engine ad programs.

What is an Affiliate Program?

An affiliate program is a business opportunity that allows independent webmasters to provide links to business products and services (i.e. home loan application), on his or her websites, that their online visitors may be interested in apply for, whether it be an application for an online college or to belong to a book club. Therefore, as a webmaster, you will be considered an independent contractor, and not an employee of the affiliate program. In addition, the affiliate program may be paid by the advertisers, in advance, in order for new or established affiliates (independent webmasters like yourself) to place links on their websites of these advertisers (e.g. credit card companies or travel insurance issuers).

What Must You Do To Get Paid, as an Affiliate?

Most affiliate programs do not allow face to face sales, unless it involves some sort of insurance product. In almost all other cases, links of the advertisers (i.e. types of cell phones) must appear on your website. Depending on the purpose of your website, you might integrate the affiliate program’s links in the text of the article or off the side and or above the article. You may strictly use text links (links that only contain words) or a combination of text and picture links. Remember to always follow the rules established by the affiliate program and its advertisers. Otherwise, you might not be paid for making changing to the existing links or be banned from the program for not complying with the rules of your affiliate agreement.

How Do You Get Paid?

You should realize that all affiliate programs and advertisers are not the same. Within an affiliate program, it is likely that you will have some advertisers that pay you for every good lead (i.e. insurance quote for life insurance) that is generated, while others require an actual sale of the product (i.e. approval of an auto loan). In most cases, you should expect more income from a sale than from a generated lead, but it depends on the company and the product or service offered. The affiliate program usually sends the check to its affiliates, as opposed to the advertiser. Keep in mind, there may be an earning threshold (i.e. $35 in a month) before you receive a payment for the leads and or sales that were generated from your website. There are a few affiliate programs that pay on a weekly basis, while most others pay by the 15th of the next month, or you might have to wait forty-five days after the earnings period is over to receive payment. This is a good reason why you should know how the affiliate program pay its affiliates. Also, many affiliate programs prefer direct deposit because of the reduced administrative costs than having to print and mail a live check to an affiliate.

Conclusion

Some webmasters sell their own products and services, on their websites. Even if this is the case, you might wish to generate more income by belonging to an affiliate program. Thus, a good understanding of an affiliate program’s pay structure and how to generate leads and sales can enhance your income.

Additionally, it is easy to learn about an affiliate program’s reputation. You can usually find webmasters complaining about a bad one in a webmaster’s forum. Many of the better affiliate programs may be members of the Better Business Bureau or have received an industry award that can be verified for its authenticity.
