Be Your Kids Own Role Model
By: Jason Cunningham (01/10/2006)
In my opinion, there are too much parents in America that are not
stepping up to the plate. Why do we expect other people to be our kids' role
models? In a world where some people swear that this a Godless society, why not
be number one in your children's lives?
I am sure that we can discuss why some kids have behavior issues or do
not succeed in school. The foundation of anyone begins and starts at home.
It does not mean that your children will always be "angels" in life. As human
beings, we are prone to making mistakes; however as each of us progress in life,
those early lessons will be our moral compass. I often refer to myself as the
"prodigal son." Yet, I can say that 99% of my bad habits are gone, because of
what my parents instilled in me, and they are still my role models.
Some parents say that their kids seem to worship people on the TV. They
would prefer to watch TV instead of spending time with you. There are some
parents who use their TV as the dependable babysitter. Kids know when you do not
want to be bothered with them. I guess someone else will show them love and
affection? It may be a rap artist on the tube or worse case scenario, the drug
man on the corner. As a parent you have to take a stand against anything that
may negatively influence your child. You signed on the dotted line once your
child was born. I understand things are harder because of the rising costs to
raise a child and the necessity to work more hours to survive. Turn the TV off
and read a book or help your child with their homework.
Remember Denzel Washington, Ben Affleck, nor Lebron James will probably
not be at your child's graduation from high school or college. All of your
sacrifices throughout the years, should be incentive for you to be your child's
favorite role model. These children are your legacy, so it is your duty to be
the leader of your household. You sternness today will be seem as love when your
child is old enough to realize why you do certain things. Remember to be your
own kids role model.
