BET Uncut Has Been Canceled
By: Jason Cunningham (7-20-2006)
I could not believe the cancellation of BET Uncut. It was by far the most
controversial video show on television, if do not count something that would be
on the Playboy or Spice Channel. While BET appeared on television at 3am EST, it
still drew a lot of criticism from Churches, women, and other leaders.
Where did BET Uncut go wrong? I think the "Dirty South" videos caused the show
more harm than good. It was one thing to show "half-naked" black women. Some of
these video promoted drug use, prostitution, or drinking. Also, some of these
videos had children in them. I wonder what they think by involving children.
In our society, there is a strong sentiment that black women are being abused.
One of the most popular medias to attack is hip-hop videos. The general
stereotypical video depicts beautiful black women as sex objects in a club, or
as dancers that could be strippers. BET Uncut definitely showed women of less
than a certain class. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see women in a club
or in public, dressed as those in the BET Uncut videos.
I don't see BET Uncut making a television comeback. The channel BET has taken a
lot of criticism for catering to the religious groups, but also contributes to
the degradation of women through the airing some of its videos. BET uses airtime
for their variety shows to blast rappers and hip-hop artist that make videos
with women wearing as much as thong, but the network keeps showing these videos.
The cancellation of BET Uncut is not going to liberate the black
community, especially its women. We have just found some "fools gold." Why are
people worry about what is being showed at 3AM. Are your children not in the
bed? BET Uncut was for adults not the youth. Nevertheless, I hope the religious
groups and others that hated BET Uncut can promise a better community this time
next year. I am not saying canning the show was not a good thing. I just want to
some to see progress due to its cancellation.
