Brown's Kellen Winslow Jr.
Injured Again
By: Jason Cunningham (5/23/2005)
I was very hopeful when the Cleveland Browns
drafted Kellen Winslow Jr. with the sixth pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. The
son of Hall of Famer TE Kellen Winslow, Sr. was supposed to be the starting TE
for the Browns. However he lasted only two games in the 2004 NFL season,
catching five passes for 50 yards, and broke his leg. Fast forward to May 1,
2005, Winslow Jr. was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, in which it has
been reported that he has a torn ACL.
I really suspect that the younger Winslow
will never suit up again as a Cleveland Brown. Unlike other sports, professional
football does not have wonderful guarantee contracts, except signing bonuses,
but most of his will be rendered null and void because of the motorcycle
accident. The Cleveland Browns would have definitely listed motorcycle riding as
a prohibited activity in his contract. While I believe Winslow will play again,
he will do it as a free agent, and be signed to the league minimum until he
proves his legs can withstand the punishment of the NFL.
It is unfortunate that Winslow is once again
injured. I appears that he could have been just as good, or better than his
father at the TE position. Hopefully he can rebound from this latest setback in
his young NFL career.
