Cleveland Browns: Butch Davis Last Dance
By: Jason Cunningham (08/17/2004)
Barring an amazing 2004 NFL Season,
Cleveland Brown Coach Butch Davis will be looking for a new job after the
season is over. Since coming to the Browns in 2001, Coach Davis has
compiled a combined record of 21 wins -28 losses, including one playoff
appearance in 2002. The success that Davis built at the University of Miami
has failed to materialize so far in his stint in Cleveland.
Preseason is not always a good barometer
of whether a football is going to be successful throughout the regular
season. For one, newly acquired quarterback Jeff Garcia must be accustomed
to the new offense, and get on the same page with his wide receivers.
Second, the Browns' coach is allowing running William Green to lose his job
to Lee Suggs. It is going to happen unless Butch Davis really wants to be
unemployed.
The Cleveland Browns lack of an
effective offensive line will prove to be downfall and prevent a playoff
run this football season. It is no question that the Browns' defense
will have more success than their offensive counterpart. Look for a season
record of 8 wins - 8 loses. The fans can be expected to cheer, but by
season end the chants for running Butch Davis out of town, unfortunately
will not be ignored.
Personally I believe Davis will
eventually be a terrific coach in the NFL. He reminds me of New England
Patriots Head Coach Bill Belechick, who also coached the Cleveland Browns
at one time. This maybe the last dance for the young coach Davis in
Cleveland, however he has a bright football career in coaching ahead of
him.
