College Sports Has Become A Commercial
By: Jason Cunningham (11/22/2005)
I am not mad that the NCAA is making a
lot of money. Actually I applaud them to for being innovative and making great
business decisions. You no longer have to wait for a TV timeout or halftime to
see some commercials.
In Division I football, basketball,
baseball, etc., teams are wearing brand name jerseys made by the likes of Nike.
Stadiums often have banners of businesses who promote their products on the
sideline, or in the backdrop the basketball gymnasium. It appears that a yard
sale is going on, and NCAA is the auctioneer. College athletics not only put
people in the seats, but depending on your sports program it may put the
microscopes in the science lab.
People around the globe watch NCAA
sports. We may take it for granted in America, however advertisers depend on us
watching it religiously. Often most of us have our favorite teams and get pumped
up when they face their rival, such as The Ohio State University vs. the
University of Michigan in football. We feel compelled to watch these games, and
the NCAA smartly sell commercial time for these sought after matches at a
premium.
I often wonder if college sports will
get to be like auto racing. The cars are so covered by advertisement that they
are almost one on top of the other. You just never really know what you are
going to get. Who could have told you 10 years ago that jerseys contain a
commercial symbol such as the Swoosh? The future of commercialization of college
sports is unlimited because the NCAA can subtlety push the envelope without
experiences much backlash.
