Colts Coach Tony Dungy: Do or Die
By: Jason Cunningham (8/17/2006)
This season will be Indianapolis
Colts Coach Tony Dungy sixth season with the organization. No one is talking
about making a coaching change; however if the team fails to reach the
Superbowl, it will become a reality. While I believe Dungy is the right man for
the job, I have to remember my demographics.
Last year, the Indianapolis
Colts were supposed to win the Superbowl. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh came to
town, and defeated them in a NFL Playoff Game, on its way to winning its team
fifth NFL Superbowl. Also, there was the death of Tony Dungy's son, James
Dungy.
The 2006 Indianapolis Colts
no longer have the services of running back Edgerrin James, who has moved on to
the Arizona Cardinals. This may be a tough blow for the Colts, unless
their rookie running back Joseph Addai can be an effective pass blocker and
receiver out of the backfield.
Let's face it, the Colts are not getting any younger. All-Pro
quarterback Peyton Manning is entering his 9th NFL season, and this receiver
Marvin Harrison's 11th NFL season. It is probably safe to say Coach Dungy's job
is on the line.
There are several reasons Tony Dungy should be allowed to
stay, even if the Colts fail to get to the Superbowl. It only took Pittsburgh
Steel Coach Bill Cohwer 14 seasons to win the big game. The team makes a lot of
money for the city and always makes the playoffs.
In the Indianapolis area, there will too many fans against
Dungy, unless the team achieves a Superbowl victory. Let's see if Indianapolis
Pacers Basketball Coach Rick Carlyle gets the same
treatment.
