Dividing Lines between Rich and Poor
By: Jason Cunningham
The division of wealth among the rich and
poor is staggering. According to the Federal Reserve Board study of 1983, 10% of
the U.S. population owns 86% of the country's household assets. What can be done
to drastically improve the lives of those who are poor?
Money is a defining variable of success in
America. Without money, you are basically at the whims of the system. If you
cannot pay your rent, you need to pray that your landlord gives you time,
to scrape some money together. Those who have money can enjoy culture, the
fine arts, and all the aesthetics of life.
What is so different about those who own most
of the country's wealth? Are they smarter than anyone else or did they just
inherit the money? Some did inherit money, but others did not, so inheritance is
not a viable answer. Many graduates of IVY league colleges never become rich.
The individuals who are financially successful and took advantage of their
big break, which they helped to create. These individuals learned how to
maximize their opportunity. The Oprah Winfrey's, the Bill Gates of this world,
built a product and never rested since. Instead of saying I have had
enough, they keep pushing themselves and reach new heights. No one is blaming
these individuals. Actually, they are very generous with sharing their money
with others through education and for research.
Why worry about the
disparity of wealth in this country? Two reason, you can get cheaper labor
overseas and the internet. It is obvious how moving jobs to foreign lands can hurt
the employment rate in this country. In twenty years, people will make most of
their purchases on-line. That means there will be less of a need for many of
those who work in customer service roles. This could be potentially dangerous,
because with fewer
available resources, people have a tendency to move towards more violent
actions.
We all see the country moving to a less
customer, friendly environment. When you call a big company, you usually have to
wait five to ten minutes before you talk to a live person. The solution is to
change our children's thinking. The society is forcing individuals more than
ever to become entrepreneurs. Schools should teach kids to be businessmen and
businesswomen instead of being employees. This is the key to narrowing the gap
between rich and poor. We need all Americans to live at a comfortable standard
of living.
