Do Liberals want God to Disappear?
By: Jason Cunningham (09/24/2004)
It is ironic that you rarely hear from Islamic or those in the
Jewish community that there is an attack on God and religion in this country. At
liberal colleges, God is a mainstay in Philosophy class, contrary to what people
may tell you.
The notion that all liberal want God to disappear is outrageous.
I will agree that occasionally the ACLU does support a position in opposition of
God that makes my head shake; namely wanting to remove the word God from the
Pledge of Allegiance. There is no reason to take out the word God, because it
does not favor or attempts to establish a state-sponsored religion, which is
forbidden in the First Amendment of the Constitution. Not everyone in the
liberal community agrees with the ACLU at all times.
Is there a reason some Christians feel there religious values
are being attacked by liberals? I would say overall no, but there is an enormous
fight being waged in this country concerning the necessity of Christian ideas
and values being displayed in public places. I would concede that having a cross
representing Jesus in a public park, while not allowing a picture of Buddha to
be present; this would be clearly give the impression that the state favors one
religion over another.
Many liberals feel right at home at Church and have lively
debates about the Bible. At least this has been my experience in life. The fact
of the matter remains, even if people pray differently, have quite the opposite
viewpoints on religious matters; without a doubt, liberals as a whole will never
take the Bible or your religion from you.
