Does the Book of Revelation Signal the World End or Just Coded Words?

By: Jason Cunningham (7-24-06)

Many believe the Bible's Book of Revelation is a sign of the so-called "End Times." While its words are full of apocalyptic language, I believe these individuals are ignoring some obvious factors, which could lead them to a different idea about the true meaning of the Book of Revelation.

As a child, I saw the Book of Revelation as scary writings that predicted the end of the world. In high school, I took four years of Latin. The study of this language and Roman and Greek civilization ended up changing my viewpoint on the Book of Revelation.

In Revelation 17:9,"...The seven heads are mountains, on which the woman sitteth." Which place in this world is considered to be the place of "seven hills?" It is Rome. During these ancient times, the Romans were well known for the religious persecution of others. The writer penned as John, the Divine of the Book of Revelation is jailed in Pathos thirty to forty years after the death of Jesus Christ, according to many Biblical scholars. The whole book to many is a revelation of the "second coming" of Jesus Christ and the destruction of evil against the community of faith.

The mark of Beast still puzzles me. However, many books have been devoted to 666. It took several years into my college career to learn that its meaning is cryptic. Maybe John, the writer was pointing to the Emperor Nero? While some argue that based on Jewish numerology, Nero's name is not a match. Yet, Nero caused terror to the early Church, and blamed the Christians for the fires that destroyed Rome.

The whole idea of the end of the world loomed even in Biblical times. Still, we are living in a world created God. These are not the signs of the time. Sure, this world has evil leaders from time to time, but I'm not sure that "the Beast" mentioned in the Bible is not Nero.
