Getting Political and Religion
By: Jason Cunningham (08/05/2004)
Some say, "What you believe in is just
as important as what you say." The gift to gab is a necessary ingredient for any
good politician to possess. Therefore any political debate or position should be
geared toward the target audience. When a politician's audience is focused on
their moral clarity and religious ideas, the political leader must be able to
make bold statements which garner support.
We must ask ourselves is religion a political
issue? It sure is, look at the conviction of the Republican Part, in regards to
attracting people who reject many of the secular beliefs that exist in our
society. Also, depending on your religious background, you may be more attracted
more to the left or right of the political spectrum, and this is highlighted by
your voting pattern. Some people are swayed by those who can put religion into
their political message, while at the same time, opposing abortion of any kind.
Next does religion and politics mix well?
Whether you are a right wing conservative or left wing liberal, religion works
in the political sphere, but on two different planes. Those who support the
right are more critical, in regards to issues that they see in conflict with
their moral beliefs. Some of them see abortion, the lack of marriage, the
divorce rate, violence on television, and more, as threats to the fundamental
beliefs of their religion. While individuals on the left, seem more preoccupied
with trying to extend their religious ideology beyond the pages of their faith,
and applying them to social issues such as equality and feeding the hungry.
Why do some vote for a party that does not
match their religious ideology? Sometimes individuals who are conservative in
their religion, still vote on a liberal ballot. Maybe they grew up poor, do not
see the legitimacy of tax cuts, or fail to own their own business. On the other
hand, those who have a religion background that is liberal could be a registered
Republican. They may disagree with the moral direction of those liberal leaders
in the community, are firmly against abortion, or that more matters than the
environment and rebuilding the state of the political government.
Do politicians expressing their religion appear credible or is it a leap of
faith? Regardless of what goes on behind close doors, Republicans in the
political arena always appear to show more religious valor in speech, but Former
Democratic President Jimmy Carter can give them a run for their money. Now
it is up to you... whether you believe that it is a leap of faith of some to
believe wholeheartedly in the religious, political message fed to us by some
politicians. It is not my job to judge an individual's moral faith, that God's
domain, but their actions may steer me away in certain situations.
