Healthcare in America Should Be
the Number One Political Issue!
By: Jason Cunningham (1/29/2006)
The year 2006 is a big election year.
It may not have the glitter or glamour of a Presidential Election year, yet
control of Congress is up for grabs. In this election season, there is one issue
that should not be ignored and that is healthcare in America.
Politicians on neither side of the
aisle have seemed to come up with a viable solution to the spiraling cost of
healthcare. This issue is not going away. The Bush Administration has touted
their Health Saving Accounts (HSA) as an alternative to keep health costs
down. The idea is to get the worker to pay for the first $1,100 or $5000 or so
of their health costs. It depends of your annual deductible. The true advantages
of the plan include your ability to choose where to spend your health related
expenses (some exceptions may apply) and the money can be rolled over and stays
with you when you leave your employer.
Most people in this country have health
coverage through their group health insurance plan at work. However, as
the price of health insurance premiums continues to rise, employers are asking
their employees to flip a greater percentage of the bill. A considerable
percentage of the American workforce is making considerably less money now,
than even three years ago. It is very dangerous that some workers are making
tough decisions in regards to funding their children's education or settling
debts and keeping their health insurance coverage. What can be done to stop
this tragedy?
We need to focus our efforts on
creating an universal health insurance that offers competition to one's group
health insurance plan. I believe that everyone should undergo underwriting,
however no one can be turned down. There is no reason why any American is
without health insurance. We owe it to the least of us to protect their health
and happiness. People can swear by other issues, but when it comes to going to
the doctor or hospital; a lack of coverage can bankrupt a lot of us. Urge
your Congressperson to promote an universal health insurance plan for all
Americans.
