A Humane Society
By: Jason Cunningham
The creation of a "humane society" is a
very difficult task. It can be attributed to the fact that all of us have very
different meaning of what is humane. Also, what is considered humane may change
within a society.
Today, individuals from all walks of life
believe our society is less humane than before. The amount and type of murders
and other crimes have only magnetized these beliefs. Television may be allowing
us a greater look at these criminal behaviors. Some people live in fear because
of some of the not humane activities our neighbors, or their associates
may engage in.
As a society, we decide what is "humane."
Sixty years ago, the U.S. majority who had voting rights had no problem with Jim
Crow laws, and the derogation of African Americans. The treatment of African
Americans back then was deplorable and will always be a shameless scar for this
land. Yet today the U.S. has taken it upon themselves to depose of leaders from
other countries, who engage in the same activities or allow it to happen. Is
this acting in a "humane manner?" Well it depends what depends on your position.
Those being oppressed may agree with the U.S., those leaders in their way may
believe we are not humane.
Everyone has their own view on what is
humane. Some may believe that capital punishment is a humane manner to deal with
those who murders, others may not share this viewpoint. Stealing in some nations
is punishable by a loss of a hand. Many in this country do not think this
punishment is humane. We all have different thoughts about what actions our
humane in ours and others' societies.
A lot of ministers states
that they were called by God to the ministry. It is as if everyone else chose
their profession, including the teaching profession. Also, ministers have an
unfair advantage over the rest of us. A minister can claim your offerings as
what God has commanded you to do. No disrespect, but open your eyes people. No
one endures more than teachers. They deserve to make at least what upper
management in Corporate America make. You cannot tell teachers in some school
districts that they chose poverty, in the hopes of making all us better, and not
apply the same standard to ministers. I am not saying ministers should not make
$100,000 a year; however, teachers deserve at least that much in salary, if not
more. Stop taking teachers for granted.
