I still remember arriving on campus for MBA orientations. Although orientations seems like it occurred many days ago, this is really not the case. Ironically, I must admit that I have changed for the better since the third week of August, the beginning of orientations. In the meanwhile my mind has expanded and my confidence has been enhanced by the many opportunities to prove myself, in and out of the classroom.
Currently, I am moving closer to the end of my first semester in graduate business school. It has been a rewarding experience. I have spent many days and nights reading chapters of textbooks and completing homework assignments. I have met people from around the globe, participated in fascinating classroom discussions, and become a better teammate within three months. However, if I can tell you anything about graduate business school, the most important lesson you will learn is how to improve your time management skills.
It is easy to say you want to go to graduate business school. However, the process of picking the right school is not as simple as looking at school rankings. Therefore, you must have a clear understanding of your future personal and professional goals as well as your current strengths and weaknesses as you research graduate business schools. Also, you must decide on whether to attend a full-time or part-time MBA program. In this article, I will take the perspective that you will be applying to a full-time MBA program within the near future.
First, I am writing this article from the perspective of full-time graduate business school student. Therefore, I do not know what it is like to be a part-time MBA student. Now here is my disclaimer: while my MBA experience may not be the same as your MBA experience at another graduate business school, I will reveal both my thoughts as well as the thoughts of others who have attended other MBA programs.
On several occasions, I have been asked to describe what graduate business school is really like. First, it has been challenging, but this has been the most rewarding experience of my life. Honestly, I am constantly reading textbooks and analyzing case studies and data. In addition, I find time to read the Wall Street Journal and watch CNBC and Bloomberg.
