The Iraq Exit Vote Was a
Publicity Stunt
By: Jason Cunningham (11/19/2005)
Last night in Congress, the House
voted on whether to withdraw US troops out of Iraq. Clearly this was an attempt
by some within the Republican Party to embarrass Democrat John P. Murtha of
Pennsylvania, who on Thursday stated there should be a deadline in which to
start pulling troops out of Iraq.
I never thought I would never see the
day that politics could reduce a serious matter as war into a partisan stunt. It
is one thing to bicker or grandstand on an issue such as abortion, but it is
another thing to orchestrate a vote when young people are dying or risking their
lives in the name of freedom. There is no way that anyone in either party,
Democrat or Republican believed there was enough support in the House of
Representatives to bring the US troops home! The Friday evening vote was more of
a news story than an urgent matter that needed quick resolution.
The Iraq Exit vote will come back to
haunt the Republican Party in 2006. First of all, some of the American troops
need to come home if they expect to win an election. The War in Iraq was a
Republican idea from the start, so any praise or blame for the outcome is
clearly resting on their shoulders. This so called vote did not bring hope to
the troops. If the troops are following the news, then they should know that the
Iraqi War is alive and well and not about to end. It really was a waste of time
to attempt to shame Democrat House of Representative John P. Murtha, who is a
retired Marine colonel.
