Judge Cale J.
Bradford Against Pagan Beliefs
By: Jason Cunningham (5/31/2005)
I could not believe the article in The Indianapolis Star on May 26, 2005. The
front page headline of the newspaper read "Judge: Parents can't teach pagan
beliefs." In the article written by Kevin Corcoran (whose email address is
kevin.corcoran@indystar.com),
he states, "An Indianapolis father (Thomas E. Jones Jr.) is appealing a Marion
County judge's( Judge Cale J Bradford, chief judge of the Marion Superior
County)...order that prohibits him and his ex-wife from exposing their child
(who is nine) to "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals. Further reading
leads you to understand that the parents of this child practice Wicca.
If there is ever a case of
judicial activism, here it is in plain view. In all of the hoopla over
protecting fundamental religious rights in America, who of them will stand up
for this man? Even though Mr. Jones' child goes to a Catholic school in
Indianapolis, what right does a judge have in stating what faith you can or may
not teach your child, without clear and concrete of malice towards the child? A
lot of people of varying faiths, including my parents; end up sending their
children to parochial school. If Judge Cale J. Bradford's decision is
allowed to stand, then the rights of those who do not adhere to
traditional religious values are forever endangered. This could be the
"slippery slope" that divides the country even further.
I would love to hear Judge
Bradford, in his own words explain how he reached his decision. Maybe there is
something else in the case that has not been revealed to us. Judge Bradford
could believe that Wicca is detrimental to a child, because it lacks his beliefs
of God, and going to Catholic school is not a good mix. Regardless of what
he was thinking, the judge has put himself into another issue that cause a lot
of religious and political debate.
