Keeping it Real
By: Jason Cunningham
There is a term that is used quite often in our society
and that is "keeping it real." Generally you might hear these words out of the
mouth of an individual who identifies themselves with the hip-hop generation.
At the heart of term, one who supposedly is "keeping it real"
does not worry about what others think of them and shows this through their
actions. This does not mean that the activities one chooses to participate in
are necessarily negative. They can be quite the opposite, maybe you enjoy
playing the cello or studying astrophysics. Those who neglect their interest,
because of the opinions of others, can appear to be not "keeping it real."
Yet sometimes, "keeping it real" can best summed up as a
timeless saying that uses are about as good as one of Freud's theories. Men wear
suits on interviews and shine their shoes, but you may prefer to have on a polo
shirt and slacks. Sometimes you are forced in a situation where you must conform
to society. in order to earn a paycheck or dress for the social occasion. It is
important to have values that make you stand out as an individual, however
remember there can be financial or emotional consequences as a result of
"keeping it real."
It is necessary to remain true to self. Never try to outdo
someone or put on airs for the purpose of trying to hide flaws in self or
belittling others. This is where the term "keeping it real" will continue to
have a lasting impact. So be yourself, love thyself, and always remain strong in
thought and deed.
