Liberal Education Does Not Leave God At Home

By: Jason Cunningham (12-2-05)

There is absurd notion that liberal education attempts to erase God from your memory. As a graduate of a liberal institution, Oberlin College, I can honestly say that even in philosophy class, God was alive and vibrant. I do wish the liberals would be a little more vocal about the subject, not as an attempt to wear God on their sleeves, but to remind others of the communities' diversity of thought.

I often wonder why people associate liberal idea and thought with atheism. It makes no sense. Yes, there are some atheist professors and students at liberal institutions, but the same can be said at public colleges and universities. I have never seen any study that indicates that most people associated with the liberal arts do not believe in God. It is just not true.

I remember even philosophical discussions about the existence of God in philosophy class. There was no professor trying to debunk our religious beliefs, but to challenge to our arguments and to teach the fundamentals of deductive logic.  Now our lectures on God lacked a specific religious dogma, however we read St. Thomas Aquinas. You are not taking away God from people if you do not speak about the Christian experience or Islamic influence in a class that is about philosophy.

There are certain religion classes that may or may not agree with the teachings of your religion. Is this any different than the many kinds of Christian denominations? People believe in what they want, whether it  be in a liberal or conservative institution or setting. How weak do you have to be if you think that you could be easily influenced or your child, who is now an adult by a college professor to change your religious beliefs!

Liberals get enough bad press when a professor goes off on President Bush. Now do you want them to teach your religious philosophy in their classroom, or would you rather have dialogue that furthers thinking and does not impose their religious beliefs, or lack of it in your face. If you have a different opinion or agree with me then send an e-mail to: president@financial-shopper-network.com - I publish responses only at your request.
