Lions' Marcus Pollard Big
Mistake
By: Jason Cunningham (10/05/2005)
Last Sunday, in the Detroit Lions 17-13
loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, TE Marcus Pollard of the Lions made a
serious error in the closing seconds of the game. Steve
Mariucci, Head Coach of the Detroit Lions may stand behind Pollard's attempt to
catch a ball in the end zone with 13 seconds left in the game, however after
review by way of instant replay it was determined he did not have possession of
the ball before sliding out of the end zone.
I honestly thought
that Pollard had possession after watching the replay a dozen times. Yet if
Pollard did not slide then surely he would have still caught the pass from
QB Joey Harrington. I really thought Pollard was attempting to slide like
Cleveland Indians' and Toronto Blue Jays' former great, Joe Carter. Clearly by
putting the decision of whether it was a catch in the hands of the officials was
a mistake, and could hurt the Lions' chance at this year's NFL Playoffs. I know
the season is long, but the Detroit Lions cannot afford too many critical errors
if they want to have a successful campaign.
