Growing Maturity: A Look at Coaches and
Athletes
By: Jason Cunningham
One thing that athletes learn as they grow
older, upon leaving high school and collegiate athletics is that their coaches
are people. Criticism is powerful tool, however not always used wisely or at
least the end result is sometimes unwarranted.
For example, I was very instrumental in the
resignation of a coach in college. Would I do it in the same manner again, no
because there are more constructive ways to get my point across. Is there any
regret, absolutely, but that is due to a course of maturity.
If coaches and athletes fail to communicate
then their may be a failure to communicate. A team with no clear voice, or a
listening ear is doomed to experience the joys of ceremonious success. They say
winning cures all ails, no it is just a temporary substitute similar to money.
It all starts with respect. The athlete must
respected the coaches and vice versa .Whether it's Saturday afternoon or on the
hard-court, the team has to put differences aside for those two to three hours
and execute their game plan to near perfection.
