Maurice Clarett and the NFL Combines

by: Jason Cunningham

February 21, 2003

After winning the right to enter the NFL Draft early, Maurice Clarett decides to skip this weekend's combines held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rumors and speculation have ranged from Maurice being out of shape or possibly needing time to heal from an injury. Regardless of the reason, NFL Scouts representing individual teams cannot be happy by his decision.

There has been speculation that Clarett admits to weighing 237 lbs, 7lbs above his idea weight. This has been pitched as the reason he will not participate in the NFL Combines. Also, it has mentioned that Maurice would not workout for the scouts for at least six weeks.

This new story surrounding Maurice Clarett is not going to help his draft status. Early on, it appeared that he would be a solid, late second draft pick or third rounder. Now if Maurice slides to the fifth round, do not be surprised. Questions about his character are naturally going to surface, because of allegedly giving a false report to the police, speculations of improper dealings with a booster, and the avoiding the  NFL Combines. When Maurice Clarett decides to finally workout, he may be faced with a smaller audience than he is accustomed to seeing.

Clarett should be a solid pro, however he may soon find himself needing a wake up call. Maybe his success at The Ohio State University has gone to his head. Whatever happened in the past, let it stay there, and remember as an employee, you work at the pleasure of your bosses and not vice versa. The federal court ruled in your favor, so now go out there and make the most of the opportunity.
