Miami's Ricky Williams Stays Retired
By: Jason Cunningham (12/4/2004)
This week through his lawyer, it was
announced that All-Pro running back Ricky Williams of the Miami Dolphins has
decided to stay retired. It is sort of surprising that Williams allegedly turned
down the NFL's proposal to be reinstatement, when he could be forced to return
millions in signing bonus dollars.
The saga of Ricky Williams is
intriguing, but it probably safe to say he will stay retired. Sometimes I
believe he might have played football because of others, and not out of real
passion for the game. There are some among us that have special athletic talent,
which leads them to a million dollar salary in the NFL, NBA, or MLB. Sure,
Williams worked hard to get to the league, but maybe he is just a fitness nut. A
life of founding a holistic store might be what makes Ricky Williams happy.
I really believed that he was coming
back. That signing bonus would be enough for the average person, but maybe not.
John Madden said on Monday Night Football, "If you play one down of NFL football
your body is never the same." He is probably right, and it is possibly Ricky
does not want anymore NFL punishment and enjoys his illegal drug habit,
according to our country's laws. No matter what happens, he was still a great
player in 5 NFL seasons.
