Mid-Season Baseball Steroid
Report
By: Jason Cunningham (7/09/2005)
As of yesterday, six major league players have been
suspended for performance enhancing drugs. Congress held hearing with past and
present superstars, and only one player have I ever heard of before this season
tested positive for banned drugs, and that is Tampa Bay's Alex Sanchez.
President Bush made the crusade against steroids part of his State of the Union
Address.
Where is the proof that Congress needs to step in
and stop the baseball drug madness? I am not saying that steroids and performing
enhancing drugs should be tolerated, but wasting so-called political capital on
this issue appeared to be unwarranted. It is possible that an All-Star player
could test positive in the second half of the season, but then again maybe not.
During the steroid hearings in front of Congress, MLB Commissioner Bud
Selig and other officials and players were shamed by members of the legislative
body of our government for not being harder on the steroids issue, including a
player having the choice of accepting a fine or suspension for their first
offense. Players now are suspended without pay. At the end of the
season, I am sure our Congress and President Bush will take the credit for the
success of the baseball new drug program.
