MLB First Steroid Suspension of 2005
By Jason Cunningham (4/3/05)
I
never expected MLB's first steroid suspension to be someone like Outfielder Alex
Sanchez of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. A pitcher or semi-power hitter seemed to be
the vision in my head for the person to succumb to the first 10 game suspension
of the season for violation the steroid policy. However this incident will not
help the issue of steroids in baseball go away in the near future.
Alex Sanchez and his career 4 home runs and
114 stolen bases will be missing from the Devil Ray's line up for the next 10
games, including opening day against the Toronto Blue Jays. It is not clear at
this point what substance he took, which contained the steroid that got him
suspended by MLB. Do you think Congress is scratching their heads tonight about
Alex Sanchez. Hopefully if the league wants to improve their tarnished
image, they will soon release that information to the public.
The monetary loss of 10 games, or about 6.1%
of the games because of a steroid suspension may encourage players in MLB, to
investigate what they are putting in their bodies. Each player should just not
take a pill or cream from a doctor or trainer without question, and checking its
ingredients against any banned substances.
