NBA: No More Mid-Season Ownership Changes
By Jason Cunningham (4/4/05)
When the NBA transferred ownership of the Cleveland Cavs to Dan
Gilbert on March 1, 2005, know one could have envisioned that his team would not
be in the playoffs. NBA Commissioner David Stern must have pulled out his
hair this past Monday night, when the Cavs were eliminated from playoff
contentions.
The firing of former Cavs coach Paul Silas on March 22,
2005, left this team in ruin. I did not understand the decision by Gilbert,
especially when your team was sitting in the Eastern Conference, fifth playoff
position. Let the record stand, as of today, Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavs
are not in the 2004-2005 NBA Playoffs. Arguably, not having Lebron in the
playoffs has cost the NBA and Dan Gilbert millions of advertising revenue. As
sure as James has the "Chosen 1" tattooed on his back, he has been just that in
his two NBA seasons.
I truly doubt there will another mid-season ownership change in
NBA history, unless the owner is convicted of a felony or passes away. David
Stern has to be mad about not having his great gem, in James not playing in the
playoffs. The NBA now knows better, it is going to cost them this season.
