The NFL Should Force the
Washington Redskins to Change Their Name
By: Jason Cunningham (1/21/2006)
For the last seventy-three years, the
Washington Redskins have been a NFL team. Its name, in my opinion, is the most
racist name in North America professional sports. The NFL should put pressure on
the organization to change its name.
People often speak of not changing
tradition, because of its historical significance. However what if the tradition
is racially insensitive? The NCAA has made great strides in recent years by
banning certain college mascots during postseason play. Some colleges such as
the Ohio's Miami University Redhawks have changed their mascot, in light of
criticism towards its former name. At one time, Ohio's Miami University nickname
or mascot was the Redskins. The NFL would never allow a new or moving team to be
named after a recognized ethnicity. The league should pressure the Washington
Redskins to change its name. The NFL would not allow a team to bear a name
that is derogatory to African-Americans, Caucasians, or Jewish people. Native
Americans of America deserve the same respect.
The name Redskins is not paying homage
to the Native Americans. It is an ugly insult that the NFL and the Washington
Redskins are making millions of dollars promoting the stereotypical image. For
me, I see it ironic that the league always speaks about family values, but would
allow a offensive name such as the Redskins to exist. The name is not
being used for educational purposes or a way for people to learn more the plight
of Native Americans in this country. It is time for the NFL to ban the use of
Redskins trademark and name.
