No Christmas Cards From the White House

By: Jason Cunningham (12/15/2005)

Why are Americans turning against retail stores for wishing shoppers "A happy holidays,", but not the Bush Administration. Greeting cards addressed from President Bush only wish his supporters a happy "holiday season." Now what is really going, and why is there a double standard?

Sure there are some Bush supporters who would prefer a Christmas Card from the White House, instead of a holiday greeting card. However can it be said that President Bush and his Administration are being sensitive to all religious beliefs? Nevertheless, what is the difference between the greeting cards from the White House and department stores wishing you "happy holidays" through advertisement and employees' greetings? Surely no one is calling for a boycott of the White House, or to take it out of Republican running for office in 2006.

I do not mind people being wished a happy "holiday season." It better to be inclusive, than to offend someone else just to make yourself feel better. If you feel better shopping because an individual wishes you Merry Christmas, ask yourself, were you in the true spirit of the holidays in the first place? Usually I do not agree with the Bush Administration over many things, yet this time they got it right. Your religious pilgrimage is your personal experience, therefore it is not our job to analyze it. In my opinion, those who use this time of the year to celebrate the birth of Jesus, need not a Christmas Card or a store greeting to understand what it should mean to their faith.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas. What about our Jewish brothers and sisters, surely we do not want to be disrespectful to them, especially since Jesus was Jewish.  Besides if you are a conservative thinking individual unlike myself, do you really want to criticize President Bush? So what if you get a happy "holiday season" card from the White House, that is still more than what I expect! Remember everyone is getting the same type of greeting, regardless of their religious beliefs.
