Opposing Viewpoint to What's on TV
By: Jason Cunningham (11/08/2004)
Often people in American society complain about the lack of
anything good to watch on television. To those individuals, are you really
saying nothing interests you on TV, or does the programming often offend you in
some way?
Some religious groups and individual citizens have voiced their
concern over the lack of morals showed on TV. The question that must be asked is
why these so called moral shows do not often attract the type of ratings
that one might expect? Yet given the recent success of Mel Gibson's Passion
of Christ, maybe things will change. CBS's Joan of Arcadia is one
show that comes to mind that has religious overtones and has enjoyed good
ratings.
I try to convey to people if no one turns on shows you dislike,
then they will soon be canceled. No corporation wants to spend advertising dollars on a
television show that no one watches. However a more productive use of your time
would be to support those who want to launch series that match your moral
values. People do differ, this is a fact of life that will not change, this is
why folks must find others who share their viewpoints to save a show that is
about to be canceled.
There were shows from the 1950's and 1960's, that I believe
treated minorities in unfair manners, while others still enjoy these shows. If
you do not lend your support, then your favorite television may go away. The
reason reality TV is on the air, many people watch them. So if you want
to see family values on such as the Cosby Show, then push a young writer
trying to get a pilot or make sure you do not miss an episode!
