The Passing of a Icon: Coretta Scott King
By: Jason Cunningham (2/08/2006)
Yesterday, the world stopped to remember an icon for all
times. Coretta Scott King, arguably the most famous women in human civil rights
history was eulogized and laid to rest. She now resides in a tomb next to late
husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I did not go to any of the marches, or even cry at the
sight of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., but then again I was not alive at
the time. One of the first books I read in school, spoke to the bravery and
moral conviction concerning freedom for all, which the King family stood for.
Yesterday as I reflected, not only did we lose a champion of Civil Rights, but a
friend to even the least of us. Coretta Scott King married the movement that
allows me the freedom to be ultra liberal on this website. She could have faded
into the sunset when Martin Luther King, Jr. was slain, however Coretta Scott
knew that the job of fighting for freedom was far from done.
Coretta Scott King was a woman of peace and a remarkable
person, even if she had graced this earth for 200 years. The legacy she leaves
behind is more immense than the leaves in the forest. God called one of the
"good ones" home. Coretta Scott King, a woman of peace, will never be
forgotten.
