Poor Dan Reeves
By: Jason Cunningham
Dan Reeves, the coach of the Atlanta Falcons
was officially fired last Wednesday. Management believed it was in the best
interest of the team to let him go. There had been rumblings this year,
centering around Falcon's QB Michael Vick and Reeves wanting him to play.
People need to consider that Dan Reeves has
been a great coach throughout his NFL coaching career. He has led the Denver
Broncos and Atlanta Falcons to Super Bowls, yet Dan Reeves has never won the big
game. However, Reeves may end up more famous because of his two public
disagreements with high profile quarterbacks, which may have led to him being
fired in Denver and now Atlanta.
A coach with the legacy Dan Reeves has
accomplished should never be fired in the middle of the season. It serves to
embarrass and humiliate a man who has dedicated a part of his life to excellence
on the football field. Who can forget Reeves calmness as Denver's QB John Elway
orchestrated the "The Drive" in 1987, or dancing with the Falcons after winning
the NFC Championship. Even if you do not appreciate Dan Reeves' coaching style,
he should have been allowed to resign publicly at the end of the season and go
out with class.
