Reasons Not to Buy Young Jeezy's T-Shirts for Your Kids

By: Jason Cunningham (12/07/2005)

I probably listen to more rap music than your kids. Therefore I can say in good faith that Young Jeezy's Snowman t-shirts should not considered a part of mainstream hip-hop culture. No one with good sense can tell me that a  t-shirt which depicts an angry drug dealer is something your children should be wearing!

Look, I would love to hear Young Jeezy say that the t-shirt does not represent a cocaine dealer.  I would publish it right here if he reads my website. Ever since Young Jeezy hit the scene, his lyrics have been saturated with images of drug dealing. It is almost as if he proudly promotes the selling of illegal drugs.

Maybe I am wrong for being harsh, however Young Jeezy should know that if kids buy his t-shirt they are headed for trouble, in the form of school suspensions or just plain harassment from the police. Can you really blame the police for cuffing you if you are wearing a cocaine t-shirt? If I was a school principal, I would make you volunteer at a hospital where there are children addicted to crack until you cry. It blows my mind that Young Jeezy doesn't think of another symbol to represent himself, before he gets backlash from liberals in the hip-hop community.

I am all for free speech. Therefore I am not calling for the banning of Young Jeezy's t-shirts. However parents need to recognize this is not the message you probably want your children to promote. I recognize Young Jeezy is a talented guy and props are due for that, but the promotion of drug selling is where even I draw the line. You should not need to be told that drug use is so rampant in the black community that more kids are born without two parents in their lives than ever before. Drugs are crippling our way of life in the African American community.
