Should you Sign a Pre-Nuptial Agreement?
by: Jason Cunningham (11-26-06)
For most of us, the idea of planning a wedding is a joyous
occasion. However, today's divorce rate is over 50%; therefore it is important
to protect your assets coming into a marriage. Some believe a pre-nuptial
agreement gives future spouses a way out of their lifetime commitment to one
another.
Most people are excited about getting married. Yes ladies, the
majority of your future husbands are just as elated. As men, we try to keep some
of our emotions on the backburner.
If marriage gives you such a good feeling, why do you need a
pre-nuptial agreement? Well, the end of a relationship may leave a nasty taste
in your mouth. Furthermore, a divorce turns into a court hearing, which can be
costly, embarrassing, and hurtful; depending on the division assets and decision
of parental custody.
No one should go into a marriage expecting to get divorced.
Unfortunately, it will happen to the majority of us. Yet, a legal pre-nuptial
agreement can sometimes prevent a long drawn out court battle. Keeping in my
mind, some states including California are community property states, which
generally divide divorcing spouses without a pre-nuptial agreement assets in
half. Give yourself some added insurance protection, in the case of divorce.
