Sports & College Preparation
By: Jason Cunningham (6/10/05)
Do not kid yourself as a parent or a student
athlete; education in the classroom is just as important as the sport you
participate in. Understand that learning outside the sports arena is vital
in making better athletes and citizens, whether you ever play in pros or
not.
I have seen and played ball with some great
athletes in my youth. Those who were good enough to make it to the pro level,
also worked on their intellectual prowess. This does not mean that college is
right for everyone, however you must have a commitment to your books if you are
to become a better athlete. A football player who learns at his highest level in
school can expend that same energy on the playbook, and the necessary precision
to run a pass route.
It is all about building a strong work ethic. Not
only will it help get into college if you so choose, but it will aid you in your
everyday life beyond the world of sports. Clearly playing any scholastic
or collegiate sports involves a lot of hard work and commitment, so make sure
you apply it elsewhere in your everyday life.
