Why The Steroids
Issue in Baseball Will Be Forgotten
By: Jason Cunningham (12/03/2004)
If the sportswriters of America believe the issue
of steroids will drive people away from baseball this season, then they are
mistaken. I believe that advertisers who sway away from baseball will miss out
on the bargain opportunities to spend their marketing dollars. This year
will be a great year for baseball, because players will have to be clean, and
fans will have more opportunities to interact with players due to the steroid
suspicion, surrounding the MLB's players.
The media with all of their talk about Balco, Jason
Giambi, Barry Bonds, and others will only lead to more fan curiosity. People who
have not watched baseball in a few years may follow the sport just to see who
will be first to be suspended for steroid use. I predict by the MLB All-Star
Break, no sportswriters will even be talking about steroids, because the focus
will be on the pennant races in the AL and NL.
Baseball may not have another season with several people
over fifty home runs, but 45 to 50 home runs might win the home run title. This
season will be devoted to the fans, because the steroid issue even made into President's Bush State of the Union Address in 2004. People already are
tired of hearing about steroids, in regards to baseball, therefore sportswriters
will have to talk about something else to keep fans reading their columns. I
already know baseball clubs are going to portray a more family like atmosphere
for the fans, otherwise they could end up not seeing those corporate dollars
returning next season, when advertisers feel comfortable having baseball players
promote their products.
